“Fuck the EU”

Why does Victoria Nuland have to apologize for what she said in a private phone conversation? Whoever leaked this, it’s enlightening to hear, but it’s also no big deal. Besides, even US-Americans use the f-word much more often than the bleeping out in shows suggests. And no, I don’t mean just hip-hoppers and rappers 😉

And by the way: yes, fuck the EU. Very much indeed. It is the EU that sucks, not the European idea of living together in peace and prosperity without waging war on each other. I think a lot of Europeans think that way, but the Orwellian use of “EU” as synonym for “Europe” and vice versa causes many of us to think it’s a bad thing to say it like that.

The EU has too much become synonymous with a Europe that is so much bigger in reality (and I don’t just mean Schengen countries like Iceland, Norway and Switzerland either). For some reasons Russia is not considered part of Europe, even though it’s by far the largest European country, if you only count the European part of it.

Something went wrong along the way. And our politicians – and since today also our judges of the German supreme court equivalent – give away the sovereignty as piecemeal to non-elected “representatives” at the EU level. Well done!

Not that it matters. Representative democracy in the existing instances in the Western world is a joke at best. And more likely the mere prelude to another era of totalitarianism …

The name of the creator is also a nice reference for those reading between the lines: Baldur Óðinsson.

Angry terrorists

So …

… when under constant surveillance 1, will we have to give a reference whenever we quote someone, NSA?
Just curious. After all some politicians in Germany stumbled over the lack of references in their theses. Also, I am unsure about how to implement footnotes in speech.

Yours sincerely,

Five Eyes

The Five Eyes, aka UKUSA Agreement, begs one giant question.

Given that this exclusive “club” stretches across Anglo-Saxon exclusively countries and given the light Ed Snowden’s leaks shed on the relationship between GHCQ and NSA, where one wonders who is the junior partner and who is the senior partner – is the USA still to be considered a sovereign country?

Perhaps the British empire continues to exist in another form and more subtly?

Billige Hetze

Schneier briefed Congress

Bruce Schneier, a well-known cryptography expert and one of the few with access to the documents leaked by Snowden, briefed six Congress representatives on Thursday.

Probably still a more honest speech than Obama’s.

ON another note, here’s a fun quote from his latest crypto-gram:

A U.S. government employee e-mailed me, asking me not to post these on my blog. The government has a weird policy that exposed secrets are still secret, and government employees without clearances are prohibited from reading the classified paragraphs. I’ve heard this before. Basically, before exposure only people with a TOP SECRET clearance could read these paragraphs. After exposure, only people without any clearance at all can read these paragraphs. No, it doesn’t make any sense.

Well done, Mr. President!

Also immer auf Uncle Sam Schorsch Bush hören:

We must speak the truth about terror. Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories concerning the attacks of September the 11th, malicious lies that attempt to shift the blame away from the terrorists themselves, away from guilty.

We must speak the truth about $x. Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories concerning $y, malicious lies that attempt to shift the blame away from $z, away from guilty.

We must speak the truth about terror. Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories concerning $y, malicious lies that attempt to shift the blame away from the terrorists themselves, away from guilty.

Orange is the new black and terrorists are the new drugs … oh and on the street it’s colder than apples.

“The P in privacy is for pussies”, gell?

Will more nations shift right thanks to the NSA revelations?

Think about it. The logical thing to do is to go national and build up infrastructure (hardware and software) that is under full control of each respective national state. Having national routing was already raised as an idea. The logical thing would be that people become more nationalistic, facing a global surveillance state. Isn’t it?

Impressions of a Sunday morning

So I woke up a few minutes to five and got up 5:04. I then drove my significant other to the airport at Keflavík and returned to the city. On my way back I was listening to some US radio preacher (or perhaps audio-only broadcast of a televangelist) as reception was pretty bad otherwise. Fun fun fun.

On the way back I made a stop at one of the 24/7 shops and when I got back into the car it happened: nothing. I turned the key and nothing happened. The car wouldn’t start. So I called the emergency number of the rental service and waited for over half an hour. Tried several times to start the car during that waiting time, but only very shortly (no minute) before the guy from the rental company arrived, it actually started. Bad luck, I guess.

Let’s see whether I get it to start when I want to go for grocery shopping later on.

What’s the hype about VS 2010 through 2013

Finally I’ve gotten around to work a bit more with those versions. They are nice with PTVS, but heck they’re unstable. I encounter frequent crashes and hangs with all of those versions as well as slowness compared to VS 2005 – which therefore seems to remain my favorite Visual Studio for now.

Refreshed the binaries for arrived, lsads and looklink, updates to looklink

You can download all of them on Bitbucket:

looklink now also understands “placeholder files” introduced with Windows 8.1 which are placeholders for files on a linked SkyDrive that are marked online-only.

All executables are code-signed and a detached GPG signature accompanies the ZIP file that includes executables and source code.

Windows 8.1 continued pains …

So, in order to add some stuff specific to Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 I end up working a bit on Windows 8.1 these days. Mind you, it’s only for testing and therefore by no means the full horror experience.

One thing I learned already is that there is no gpedit in the version of Windows 8.1 I installed. So the straightforward way of getting rid of the help tips that try to tell me how to use gestures that are anyway unusable within a VMware guest, is out. Instead I had to search a bit and ended up with the first option from this article. Because these unhelpful tips are placed atop everything at all and usually are placed exactly on top of the GUI elements you want to click with your mouse.

And then of course I had to connect my local account to a Microsoft account, because WinDirStat should support SkyDrive files. Oopsie daisy, Windows takes the liberty to reset all my settings. Back to the ugly welcome screen, back to the login screen and back to the start screen before getting to the desktop. My other account was configured to auto-login.

My guess is that this is some plot by Microsoft in an attempt to make the user experience as horrible as possible. But I could be wrong, of course 😉 . While Ballmer considers Vista his biggest mistake, I consider the versions since Windows 8 Microsoft’s biggest mistake since Windows Me. The internals are still fine, in fact a lot has been improved on that front, but the user experience … meh …

Oh, btw, the verification email concerning SkyDrive? I clicked the link with Opera and Microsoft was experiencing technical difficulties:

We’re unable to complete your request

Microsoft account is experiencing technical problems. Please try again later.

I wonder whether that’s a euphemism for: we don’t service users of competing browsers 😆
