In a surprising move DDKWizard got updated once more …

Gleðileg jól!
(Frohe Weihnachten! – Merry Christmas!) to everyone.

I updated DDKWizard once more to version 1.1.0. And as expected this is the best DDKWizard ever 😉 … I call it the jól-edition  … grab it here!

What is new? Well, this time I’ll let you read the manual again . A whole new chapter has been added to the manual so you are asked to read through this first. The version number did make such a jump because of the overall improvement and added features. The best of those new features is the configuration file which allows you to customize the default settings in the DDKWizard project creation dialog. Another smaller feature is the new project type Win32CUI (Win32 console applications built with the DDK) and many smaller enhancements and one fix for backwards-compatibility.

Violating GPL to make the big money #2 …

Unbelievable. Even though the company is aware of their violation of the GPL, they don’t give a shit about it as it seems. They have been aware of it for at least one month now, yet their newest release which bears the version number 1.61 still contains the binary-identical file which is in violation of the GPL since version 1.55 (inclusive!).

Island sei vom Internet abgeschnitten. Ups. Ich war’s nicht

Death penalty took too long. Consequences? Yap!

The civilized world has shown its superiority again in the reactions after the execution of Angel Diaz by lethal injection in Florida took too long. Instead of finally removing the blemish from the US constitution by abolishing the death penalty forever more, people – and more amazingly human rights activists – request an investigation whether this particular type of execution is unconstitutional.

Oh how superior we Westerners are compared to those countries to which we bring freedom and democracy …

Early x-mas present: DDKWizard updated

As a kind of early x-mas present to the driver community, I have updated DDKWizard again. The new version is 1.0.3. Go and grab your copy at the DDKWizard website.

What’s new?

Three things have been changed or added:

  • Creation of PREfast configurations is now also possible for the checked build only (default).
  • For the 64bit platforms you can choose which of the two platforms AMD and Intel you would like to include.
  • The DBG preprocessor symbol will be set to 0 or 1 according to the configuration setting (free or checked).

Fixed a minor glitch in ddkbuild.cmd

Today I fixed a glitch in OSR’s ddkbuild.cmd which would cause WDF builds to fail. Grab your fresh copy at the DDKWizard website or OSR. The version should be 7.0beta4a. If it is not, check back later since OSR should upload it soon.

And don’t hesitate to contact me about the .cmd version. It was feedback of a user that revealed this problem!

Violating GPL to make the big money …

What would you think of a company that is presenting its new product which is somewhat innovative, but the product is based on OpenSource software and the company does not care about the OpenSource licenses of the used components?

As an OpenSource author I don’t like such companies. Lately I discovered this for one Asian-European company which has released a product this year. They were using OpenSource from a project in which I am involved and which is licensed under LGPL or MPL (to be chosen by the licensee). After notifying them that they were in violation of the license, they added the mandatory attribution in their help file and later seemingly removed(?) the respective units completely (the GUI part of the product is a Delphi program). DDKWizard updated

There is a new version (1.0.2) of DDKWizard available. Go and grab your copy at the DDKWizard website.

What’s new?

Three things have been changed or added:

  • Option to create PREfast configurations as well.
  • The Windows 2003 and Longhorn/Vista DDK are now preselected.
  • There is a new project type “Empty Driver”. This allows you to create a project without creation of all the source files that DDKWizard would normally create. Perfect to create an empty project for incorporation of existing source files.

Enjoy,

Marketing for security companies now via Secunia!

<sarcasm>
A great new opportunity for IT security companies which sell products to detect bugs in software automatically (static analysis) – report some vulnerabilities after running your program on a bunch of software applications and feature your own product in the “Provided and/or discovered by” field without ever giving details of the error! The last one is important, never give details! That’s sleek, that’s modern that’s seemingly a new initiative by Secunia to support third party security companies. One of the first to take advantage of this new initiative is GLEG Ltd. from Russia.

Offener Brief an GMX – Betrifft: moderne Browser (nochmal)

http://blog.assarbad.net/20060722/designfragen_gmx/

Continue reading

Article: “How Two Hours Can Waste Two Weeks”

Over at Agile Advice, you can find a very nice blog article from the perspective of a development manager. I can tell that much: at my former company the PM (same person as DM in this case) did not take the pressure from us devs, at the current company it seems wo work well. Maybe because of that one major difference … that the CTO is member of the dev team? 😉

I was pointed to the article by a friend who is currently plagued by the flu. Get well soon! 🙂

DDKBUILD.CMD updated to version 7.0beta4

OSR is going to update the DDKBUILD.CMD script on their website next week. If you can’t wait, grab your copy at the DDKWizard website.

A bug has been fixed which affected the build for WNET DDK with the two 64bit target processor platforms. Also a glitch on the help screen of the script has been fixed, which was somewhat related to the aforementioned bug.

Storm in a teacup or big deal for Novell?

A friend of mine pointed me to the following message (“open letter”) of Novell:
http://www.novell.com/linux/microsoft/openletter.html (the related press release is here). I wonder how this partnership will affect other distros, especially non-commercial. My friend says that it will have a big influence on the other commercial distros and non-commercial ones will be ignored. I am not so sure. What do you think? Leave a comment …
